When remodeling a Cape Cod style, story-and-a-half home, there are some options that need consideration, such as whether you’ll be opening up the floor plan to include a family room, home office, or mudroom. Or will you be adding on that complete second story and what it will include (master suite w/ full bath and walk-in closets, or an additional bedroom or possibly an adjacent nursery).
The most common request we receive for this style home is to update and open the kitchen to either a dinette or to a family space. It most cases the limited square footage of the simple cap cod forces adding square footage for the new design. Since many of these were originally designed with a family room the the front, the best option is to push to the rear.
Some clients plan ahead and design the upstairs bedroom for a future family, so their designs include an adjacent home office/den or guest bedroom which can easily be reconfigured for a nursery or child’s bedroom down the line.
The elevation options for a Cape Cod style remodel depend on the lot size and existing home footprint.
When adding on to the existing Cape Cod style home, remember to keep to the current home’s style, scale and proportion. Match or complement the window styles and any architectural elements, such as columns, mouldings, etc. For the Cape Cod, the Colonial Revival style columns may be the best fit.4bm7ad3vp8
